Video: 'DESERT (RE)SEARCH', El Bawiti, Egypt 2012, by Lia Sáile

In 2012, Anna Schölß, Cornelia Adam and Marcel Zaes initiated the eight-part work WÜSTEN I–VIII, a series of performance-installations with dance, music and visual elements. The three artists relocated their workplace to the Egyptian Sahara in order to develop the work in the desert. Accordingly, the first three elements were showcased in Egypt, and presentations in various theaters and art spaces throughout Europe followed.
In ‘WÜSTEN’, Schölß, Adam and Zaes, deal with one of the clearest, brightest and strongest form of the absence: the desert. The desert is the immense waiting itself. Tiny things that suddenly occur define the time whereas the major things one could possibly be waiting for probably never take place. The desert is a site where nothing happens, where nothing even has to happen. Nevertheless, the desert is never empty; it is rather continuously overcharging our human perception. Starting from this description, the artists thoroughly reduce their means, forms and contents.

The result is an installation-performance, in which they completely break with the conventional theater mechanisms. They introduce a self-created system that acts as an autonomous and mostly invisible director for the duration of the performance-installation and hence guides them in their actions. ‘WÜSTEN I–VIII’ creates images and sounds of the perpetual waiting for brief contingencies in a living void.
